You may well ask what is walking Hockey? Well, it is a slow-paced version of Hockey, aimed at all ages and genders, and it has arrived in Alderley Edge!

 

It is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle and have FUN!

 

Alderley Edge Walking Hockey Group is a “Just do it” organisation which is being driven by a small team of mature players focused to promote, develop and establish the game by holding regular hockey sessions at The Alderley Edge club. We've been running 'Back To Hockey ' sessions for over 5 years at the club and this new WALKING way to play is aimed at those either unable to run or just starting out on a fitness journey.

 

The prime aim of Alderley Edge Walking Hockey is to invite anybody who wants to participate in the game and improve their:

 

  • Fitness
  • Health
  • Wellbeing

You do not need brilliant hockey skills. The main aim is to enjoy the game, have fun and develop comradeship and a sense of belonging. So get out of the armchair, stop looking out of the window, get in touch with Alderley Edge Walking Hockey Group and start playing – you will be very welcome.

 

We have players from 25 years old to 80+ years old having fun and feeling great, and here are some of the other benefits you will enjoy:

How is the game played at Alderley Edge Walking Hockey Group?

 

  • Most importantly, the game is all-inclusive and welcomes players at any level of fitness. You don’t have to be fit to start, the idea is that the game helps to improve your fitness and well-being.
  • A team consists of either 4,5 or 6 players depending on how many people show up at a session playing without a goalkeeper. You can drop in and out of the game; maybe for a rest but also to ensure everybody gets a game. The pitch is small with small goals and we use a large plastic ball. We can lend you a hockey stick. Best to wear trainers as we play on artificial grass .
  • There is minimum physical contact to reduce the chance of injury but you may wish to invest in shin pads and a mouth guard.
  • The game has no umpire or referee with an 'honesty' policy when the ball hits your feet! If you break in to a run then the ball is turned over to the other team!
  • A player can play anywhere on the pitch, just follow the ball.
  • The team that scores the most goals wins.
  • Before the start of the game a warm up takes place. This helps to reduce injury when playing.
  • No running allowed, just walking. This drives players to use good passing skills and communication.

There are very few rules to keep it simple!

 

The game is played with a healthy dose of fun and laughter.
