ECB Cheshire Premier League

Toft 93 all out
Alderley Edge 97-0
Alderley Edge won by 10 wickets

A remarkable 10-wicket victory for Edge in the local derby at Toft has allowed the ECB Cheshire Premier League leaders to stretch their lead to a healthy 29 points over nearest rivals Bowdon as the league programme entered its second half last Saturday.

Toft won the toss and decided to bat first after early morning rain had caused a half-hour delay to the scheduled start. Toft’s decision looked a poor one with the home side 52 for 4 in the eighteenth over with captain Mark Walker and Jason Whittaker sharing the wickets between them. With Edge’s overseas star Sohail Rauf brought on first change, the going got even harder for the home side with Rauf taking a spectacular 4 for 11 off just 7.2 overs.

Toft ended up 93 all out off just 40.2 overs and without a single batting bonus point to show for their efforts. When Edge batted, they positively romped home with openers Mark Currie and Alan Day having the game won within 16 overs, Currie scoring 53 and Day 39, with only Toft’s Australian spin bowler Josh Bean giving the batsmen any real trouble. You had to feel sorry for Toft having put on a tremendous effort to get the match played amidst all the rain that had fallen, they then failed to gain a single point from the game and have been dragged in to the relegation battle at the bottom of the table.

A maximum 25 points whilst nearest rivals Bowdon were held up by rain at Nantwich, looks to have put Edge in a strong position to realise their dream of a first premier league title. With only 3 away games left out of the remaining 10 matches, Alderley must try to transfer their fine away form to their home fixtures, starting next week against Nantwich.
