ECB Cheshire Premier League
Alderley Edge 326-8 Nantwich 263-4 Drawn
Edge lost top spot in the ECB Cheshire Premier League last Saturday as a result of a high scoring draw at Nantwich that produced almost 600 runs, a premier league batting record but no overall victor.
Edge won the toss and decided to bat first on a good looking batting strip and were immediately into their stride with openers, Mark Currie and Alan Day scoring freely, putting on 130 without loss off the first 20 overs. Eventually, their partnership was broken but not until they had put on a remarkable 228, an ECB Cheshire Premier League record for the first wicket. Day eventually went for 118, with Currie scoring 104 to leave Edge in the driving seat at 242-2 off 40 overs. This was a partnership of real class with both players putting on a superb batting exhibition and deserved to set a new record for the first wicket in any premier league game. With 32 from Sohail Rauf and 24 not out, on debut, from Lancashire’s Oliver Newby, Alderley totalled 326-8 off their 55 overs.
When Nantwich batted, an early break through proved elusive and Nantwich adopted rather defensive tactics after Aussie star Glen Batticciotto was out for a whirlwind 46, and the match deteriorated into a tame draw. Despite using eight bowlers, Edge could not really get on top and there was little prospect of a positive result for the last hour’s play. Nantwich closed on 263-4 off their 55 overs, with a draw a fair result in the end. With Edge batting first and obtaining a maximum 10 batting bonus points, a points split of 14-11 in their favour was a relatively pleasing outcome and kept Alderley in second place in the league.
Next week Edge play another of the top sides in the league, this time Neston at home, and will be looking to maintain this season’s impressive form.
