ALDERLEY EDGE JUNIOR HOCKEY

Information for Children and their Parents for the season 2009 - 2010

A very warm welcome to the club. We aim to give you sufficient basic information to enable you to obtain the most out of your coaching and membership of the club.

Alderley Edge Hockey Club (“AEHC”) is widely acknowledged to have one of the best junior development programmes in the North of England and has a strong record in county, regional and national competitions. We were Cheshire U21 men’s champions for the 2005-2006 season. We were also boys U13 Cheshire, North, and National Champions in 2002, U13 Cheshire and North Champions in 2003 and are the current U13 and U11 Cheshire Champions, having won the U11’s on 3 consecutive seasons.

We also supply boys and girls to county and regional teams . Cheshire have been boys U15 National Champions in 2003-4 and 2004-5, each time with three Alderley players. Our junior sides regularly progress to the later rounds of the English National Plate and Cup competitions.

All training sessions are supervised by qualified Level 2 coaches, with Level 1 Assistants. AEHC is working towards accreditation under the Clubs First scheme run by England Hockey.

Junior age group qualifications

The England Hockey Single System for Hockey change in age group qualifications to Jan 1st has been in place since 1st  September 2007. This applies to all qualification dates for competitive hockey (apart from school based competitions and the County Minis 7 a side competitions which remain 1 September).
eg: To qualify as U13, you must be U13 on 1 January 2010, born 1997 or later etc

England Hockey has altered the structure for junior hockey moving to a Single System and AEHC are committed to helping this system work successfully to provide wider opportunity and a consistently better hockey experience as our youngsters strive to play at the highest level their abilities allow. Under the new Single System being implemented by England Hockey, Cheshire (or Lancashire) no longer exist at U13 and U14 level. Instead there will be Junior Development Centres (JDC) (playing level between club and old County) feeding into their appropriate Junior Academy Centre (JAC) (old County level) and thereafter into the Junior Regional Performance Centre (“JRPC”) at Belle Vue.

At the higher groups, U15 to U17 the old county arrangements will largely remain in place, with some adaptation to the new structure  until the current players finish.

A separate link will be added to the website to explain more details of the new arrangements, we understand it’s not all crystal clear yet !

Teams and matches

For 11-a-side teams, Alderley Edge will run two boys U15 teams (Badgers), and an U13 boy’s team (Beavers),on Saturday afternoons on most weekends throughout the season, apart from school holidays.
U15 Girls who are 13 or above, will be able to play for the Ladies teams also on Saturday afternoon. In addition Girls U15 and U13 plus Boy’s and Girls  and U11’s will have 7-a-side matches on Sundays, approximately once a month throughout the season. Also, all these teams (except Boys U15’s) are entered into the Greater Manchester Junior tournament @ Belle Vue over several Sunday’s throughout the season. We are also hoping to organise a few matches for our “Unihoc” U9’s from time to time, again on a Sunday morning.

AEHC run five men’s league teams and five ladies league teams, with the ladies fourth and fifth teams being largely developmental sides for our U15 girls. The men's 4th team aims to comprise mainly teenagers under an experienced coach and functions as the talent development pool for the club's top three men's senior teams. Badgers are promoted to this squad as appropriate.

Your co-ordinator will advise you if you are selected and wherever possible, details of tournaments, matches etc will be posted on the website. A £5 match fee is payable on the day. Please bring it with you to the match if you are selected.

Coaching/ Training

The following table summarises the key information about our Junior training sessions, starting Sun 6th , Mon 7th and Thurs 10th respectively.

The training fee, payable by cheque before the end of September, is in addition to the membership fee and is payable to cover the costs of pitch hire (including flood lights) and dedicated training kit, such as cones, bibs, practice balls etc.

Holiday coaching breaks

There will be coaching breaks over the October and February half terms and the Christmas holiday period, details of which will be posted on the website and confirmed by the coaches.

What to wear and bring with you to matches and coaching

The club colours are black shirts for home games and white shirts for away matches. Socks are black and white hoops. Shorts or skirts should be black. For those who do not yet have club kit, it can be ordered from Teresa Hadfield by completing an order, delivery time is approx 1 week. Samples will be available at Wilmslow and the Club so you can order the correct size. There will be a link on the website for ordering.

Please ensure that you also bring with you a tracksuit, a rain top and a hat and gloves for cold weather. Drinks and snacks are a good idea, as there are no refreshment facilities at the pitches. As hockey involves a stick and a hard ball, you must have a mouth guard and shin pads for coaching and matches. The club takes safety very seriously. If you do not already have a mouth guard or an available dentist, a qualified dentist will be available at Wilmslow High School on Sunday 13th September 2009. She will take fittings, orders and details of payment.

Please arrive promptly for the start time of coaching in order that the group warms up together. Coaching and matches will take place in all but the worst weather when you will be informed either via the website or via your co-ordinators of any cancellations. Parents need to check with a coach at the pitch, before leaving their child.

Membership

You are welcome to come along for two trial sessions of coaching, but we ask you to become a member after that. Membership/registration forms will be provided, which will include appropriate parental consents. The current annual club subscription is £69 for U18s for hockey only, or £81 for two sports, or £87 for three or more sports. As the club subscriptions run on a calendar year basis, your first subscription will be for the four months to Dec 2008. We cannot select you for matches if you do not become a member. Membership also entitles you to use all the clubhouse facilities in Alderley Edge. We encourage non-playing parents to become social members of the club ( £52 pa) and if your child joins for two or more sports this is compulsory.
