Alderley Edge vs Hyde 12/09/2009

Hyde 249 all out
Alderley Edge 251 for 4
Alderley Edge won by 6 wickets

Alderley Edge completed their 2009 season last Saturday with a comprehensive 6-wicket victory at Hyde to finish a very competitive fourth in the ECB Cheshire Premier League, just one point from third and with the same number of wins as champions Oulton Park.

Hyde batted first and totalled a reasonable looking 249 all out off 54 overs at a ground renowned for its high scores due to having a short boundary on all sides of the wicket. Edge’s Jason Whittaker took another four wickets to end up the Premier League’s top wicket taker with 67 wickets in a league season of 20 completed games.

Alderley fairly cantered home when they batted with yet another century from Mark Currie, 103 not out from overseas star Sohail Rauf, and 33 from opener Alan Day. This was Currie’s fifth league century of the season and he achieved 1000 total league runs for the first time, a fantastic feat of consistent scoring over just 20 completed innings. Sohail Rauf scored over 1000 in all games, including cup games, and had another marvellous season with 25 wickets as well. Edge completed their victory with fully 20 overs in hand after dispatching 34 fours, and 9 sixes to the boundary in just 36 overs.

It’s been a good season for the Alderley Edge club after winning the Cheshire Cup for the first time in 32 years and they might well have retained their league title if they had not been deducted 35 points for fielding an ineligible player in one fixture. The second team finished in mid-table in the second XI premier league, with the third team also doing well. The juniors remain one of the main strengths of the club with Cheshire league titles and representative honours being won again.

Skipper Mark Walker is retiring from premier league cricket after four seasons as captain, a period which coincided with the most successful period in the club’s first- team history with four major trophies won, a fitting tribute to a top-class man and player.
