The snow did not stop the Junior Tennis Assessment Day!
There was a fantastic turn-out at the Junior Open Day at Alderley Edge Tennis Club on Sunday 1st February. With the advent of a new Head Coach – Stuart Murray – it was a chance for more than 80 junior tennis players to play some tennis early in the new season and also to meet their new coach.
The weather during the week was a trial! On Thursday night it snowed, and by Friday morning the nine astro-turf courts were covered in a carpet of snow. Two courts were cleared Friday afternoon, and on Saturday lunch-time, a valiant work force of 20 turned out to clear the other seven – armed with a varied supply of shovels and brooms. Sunday came – and bright sunshine bathed the courts – although the temperature remained stubbornly low, and the courts still had snow piled up on the edges.
80 children on nine courts was a challenge for the six coaches led by Stuart. At one stage we had fifteen 15-18 year olds volleying at the same time on one court! The mini tennis groups fared a little better with nets set up across the courts – especially since small children take up less space than six foot something 15 and 16 year olds….. Altogether everyone had a brilliant afternoon of fun, good tennis, excellent coaching followed by tea, cake and mountains of chocolate biscuits.
Prizes were kindly provided by Jim Hall Sports and by Babolat. Several children won Babolat caps and t-shirts for hitting the targets with their serves. And the speed serving competition was a great success, with one person in each group winning vouchers provided by Jim Hall Sports. The winners were Seb Fishwick, Calum Wilson, Vienna Simic, Charlie Hambley, Tom Harari and Freddie Nowell. Freddie’s serve of 137 km per hour is apparently a record for Stuart’s speed gun machine!
The brand new coaching programme that is being introduced by Stuart Murray starts on February 17th with a half term holiday camp. The five week programme then commences on February 23rd. Further details are on the web-site and can also be obtained from Head Coach Stuart Murray.
