President's Message - November 2018

Main Image

We are almost at the half-way stage of the league season so here is snap shot of where we currently stand

The ladies are having a great season, with all teams currently in the top half of their respective leagues , the 1's are pushing hard and are currently only 1 point off one of the coveted top 4 spots , which would at the end of the season take them into the National League
The star performing teams are the 4's and 5's who are both unbeaten and lead their leagues , last weekend was a highlight seeing all 7 ladies team win - fantastic

The men's section is finding it tougher this season , however the 1's have put in a lot of work and made many sacrifices to prepare themselves for National League Hockey and made themselves very competitive , however for those of you that have been to see the games ( and 250 of you did for the game against Bowdon )you will have seen the quality of play required to be one of the top 40 teams in England
The remaining teams are all looking for an improving second half , although the 4's remain unbeaten and only sit 4 points off the top of their league

What has also been encouraging is to see more lift sharing to away games , more players going back to the opposition's and our clubhouse and a reduction in the number of plastic bottles at the Edge ( although this cold further reduce )

The England Hockey age group hockey has also started and Mark Smith did a sterling job orchestrating 9 junior teams on the opening weekend , again the girls are performing very well and have a close to 100% success rate with the North finals beckoning
The boys U14 and U16 were drawn in tough groups but have acquitted themselves well and the U18's now await to who they play in R2 of the T2 competition

Teresa and the team have seen great action on Sunday mornings and now the U10,12 and 13's are also heading of for successful competitive games at the Armitgae centre which is great to see

At the other end of the age scale the club for the first time has 4 masters teams , fielding a Mens O40 and O50 side and a Ladies O35 and O45 side , the highlight so far being the LO45 and MO50 sides returning from Bowdon on successive weekends as winners in the EH cup

You will have noticed that there is more player movement between teams this season and that is because selection is now more performance orientated , which will hopefully improve both the club and individual performances by ensuring development and playing at the right level , i know this can be seen as disruptive at times but can i please ask that the decisions of the captain and coaches are resected and if you are of uncertain of why please ask the question of the coaches and captains

A request / plea from me , we are continuing to grow successfully as a club in all areas and generally smoothly , but this is only achieved via volunteer team ( a massive thank you to all of you that put so much time and effort to ensure everything runs smoothly , and additionally huge thank you to all of you that step forward to umpire every week its very much appreciated by all the players ) however we have a small core team who need more help , so can i ask if any of you ,if you can help ( and even a small gestures will share the workload) please come forward and talk to any member of the committee to offer your services

You will have seen that the Club Christmas dinner is now arranged for Dec 15th and that tickets are for sell on the web-site , numbers are limited and tickets are selling fast another and there is a discount if you buy before the end of the month so be great if you can support this event
Also on this date we are arranging both Mans and Ladies club v Uni-Leavers games , many thanks to Amanda Bennison , Allana Buckingham , Elliot Webb, and Joe Morum in helping organising this , could i ask if anyone of you are in touch with people that have left for Uni over the last few years you encourage them to come and get involved

For any of your needing hockey equipment a reminder that "one sports warehouse " will be at the edge this afternoon and tomorrow morning with their mobile unit

John is working hard on the sponsorship front and we hope to be able to update you on that shortly

I hope you all enjoy your run into Christmas and hockey in December

Phil Benton - President
